Shingles Pain Relief

If you have any clue, shingles pain relief is probably the most important thing you seek during the time you are inflicted by this condition. For the most part, you can accept that fact that you have been diagnosed with shingles but shingles complications and the side effects that can affect you are another story altogether.

At what point is shingles contagious, and to whom?  These questions are answered in other articles I’ve written on this site and if you are interested, please have a look.

The best remedy to shingles is to seek medical help as soon as possible. The sooner treatment can be obtained can possibly result in a shorter length of time that the virus will be active and the shingles contagious period will be over.  Shingles pain relief can be obtained in a number of different forms of treatment options.

Treatment Options and Are Shingles Contagious?

The treatment that you can receive will depend upon the shingles causes, the severity of your individual case and what your doctor feels is the best treatment for you. Treatment can be in the form(s) of:

•    Antiviral medications
•    Anticonvulsants
•    Antidepressants
•    Pain medications
•    Steroids
•    Topical antibiotics/solutions

Antiviral medications can include medicines such as Acyclovir, Famvir, valacyclovir or Zovirax. These will assist in reducing pain and the length of the shingles episode. These are typically the first medication you will receive upon the diagnosis of shingles.

Anticonvulsants can include Gabapentin and Pregabalin while a prescribed antidepressant could be Amitriptyline. These are only given only if necessary and the need will vary upon each individual specific circumstances. If you have concerns about these medications, speak with your doctor.

Pain medications for shingles pain relief can be over the counter or prescribed. The possible options can include acetaminophen, aspirin and ibuprofen. If the over the counter options are not reducing the pain, your doctor can prescribe a stronger medication to allow you to be more comfortable. Of course there is a natural cure for shingles that I found to be very helpful and you can stop the pain quickly.  Follow the link above.

Topical antibiotics and/or solutions are to stop the infection of blisters as well as to relieve pain and are applied to the sufferer’s skin. These products can be over the counter or prescribed for the patient. Caladryl, Xylocaine and Zostrix are some that might be suggested.

Shingles Pain Relief and Severe Conditions:

If the individual’s case is extremely severe or if there are long-term complications, the treatment can become more intense. One common treatment is PHN or Postherpetic neuralgia which is a pain that continues for months or years. This condition, PHN, has been resolved in about a year in most of the documented cases.

Stronger medications for shingles pain relief are prescribed and the patient must be monitored. These can include NSAIDs as well as opioids; however, changing one’s diet and adding supplements may help too. Supplements such as capsaicin, fish oil, magnesium and vitamins B12 and D are said to help with pain management.

The patient may even be prescribed pain management sessions to help them deal with the severe pain that they are experiencing on an ongoing basis. The individual may also try massage therapy and acupuncture as well to relieve some or all of the pain they can and will experience during the course of the shingles episode. Regardless, the pain is extremely uncomfortable and creates a poor quality of life for the sufferer.

No one wants to live with any pain regardless of the time span. Shingles pain relief must come quickly and with fast medical assistance and proper medications it can.
