Does chlorine kill the shingles virus?
FAQ — By admin on December 8, 2008 at 10:36 pmHi! So we just moved into a lovely home with a pool and I wanted to invite a family member who broke out with the shingles not too long ago. Besides, she wants to come over to visit.
i dont believe she has an outbreak at the moment. however, is it safe if she swam in our pool? Is everyone else going to get the shingles after she gets in? Should I shock the pool after she leaves?
does Chlorine kill the virus?
Thank you for your advice.

No Chlorine doesnt kill the herpes virus. If she doesnt have an outbreak of shingles then she isnt infective.
yes chlorine CAN KILL THE SHINGLES VIRUS
Chlorine does kill pathogens.Chlorine is used in small amounts by water purification facilities to remove pathogens from water. Also Chlorine bleach(sodium hypochlorite) is used by many organizations as a very effective(yet toxic) disinfectant.
However I doubt that the recommended chlorine levels in pools are not totally sufficient to kill 100% of bacteria or viruses.
Home pools usually have significantly lower chlorine levels than public pools. This is due to the fact that home pools are smaller and that they attract a smaller variety of people.
Nevertheless even increasing the chlorine level in a home pool to public pool levels is still not sufficient to kill all pathogens.
So it is advised that the individual who has shingles stay out of the pool.If you are adamant about getting him into the pool, please refer to a doctor to see if it is safe.
Do not try to manipulate the chlorine level in a pool by yourself. You should always remember that chlorine is a highly toxic substance in excess. Please contact a qualified professional if you want to increase your pools chlorine level.
